About La Mesa California
The City of La Mesa, located in San Diego County, is a very unique inland city with a small town feel. La Mesa, also known as the “Jewel of the Hills” was founded in 1869 and became incorporated on February 16, 1912. La Mesa in Spanish means “The Table” or “The Plateau”. The Spanish roots in La Mesa go back many years. At one time La Mesa was part of the Mission San Diego Alcala and was used by Spanish missionaries.
La Mesa is bordered by El Cajon, San Diego, Lemon Grove, and Spring Valley. It is also located less than 15 minutes from Downtown San Diego and the San Diego International Airport, also known as Lindbergh Field. The beautiful city of La Mesa spanning 9.3 square miles, is located at 528 ft above sea level and has a total population of nearly 55,000 people and over 25,000 homes. Nearly 44% of the 25,000+ homes are single family detached homes with another 44% being multi-family homes and condos.
La Mesa is represented at the city level by Mayor Art Madrid, the state legislature by Republican Dennis Hollingsworth and in the Congress by Republican Duncan Hunter.
This city of La Mesa is also located in close proximity to the Lake Murray Resevoir which is home to some of San Diego’s best fishing, water sports, and physical activites. Lake Murray is a quiet, serene lake which features 3.2 miles of untouched shoreline. The county of San Diego also rents rowboats, canoes, and powerboats from the fishing dock at Lake Murray.
