About Santee California
Santee used to be called Cowleston after one of its founding father’s George Cowles. The name was changed to Santee in 1891, which was named after Cowles’ widow’s new husband in 1893. In 1950, there were approximately 2,000 people, and in 1970 that population grew to over 25,000 people. Today, there are over 55,000 people in Santee. This community has developed up to today, and will continue to develop well into the future.
Santee is minutes away from El Cajon, Lakeside, and La Mesa. Santee is less than 30 minutes away from the heart of downtown San Diego. Santee is one of the few cities that still has room to grow, with more than half of the land untouched. There are approximately 55,000 people living in this lovely town. Santee is home to 8 award winning public elementary schools including; Carlton Oaks, Carlton Hills, Chet F. Harritt, Hill Creek, Pepper Drive, Prospect, Rio Seco, and Sycamore Canyon. Santee also offers 2 public high schools which are; Santana High School and West Hills High School. The Santee School District presides over the elementary schools and the Grossmont Union High School District presides over the high schools.
Santee has 2 major parks, Mission Trails Regional Park and Santee Lakes Regional Parks, which are wonderful places to spend the day with your family/friends. Founded in 1974, Mission Trails is one the biggest parks in the US, with over 40 miles of hiking. In 1940, Santee Lakes was mainly used by farmers. In June 1961, permission was granted to allow Lake 4 to be open to the public for recreation. Every summer in June there is a “Festival of the Lakes” to celebrate the grand opening of Santee Lakes. Today, people are able to enjoy fishing, rent paddle boats, picnic, and there is a campground for RV’s and trailers, not to mention the numerous events for the community.

Santee also has a golf course, Carlton Oaks Golf Course that has been around since 1958. The golf course has been redesigned several times, and now is considered to be a legendary course. Santee Golf Course is 7,225 yards and has over 400 large trees, 3 lakes and 2 creeks. The challenging golf keeps people coming back for more. There are golf lessons offered for all ages.
